Voices

a youth photography workshop exploring identity through the lens

March 2025

A talented group of StepStones youth explored the art of self-expression through photography.

This transformative workshop empowered the participants to capture evocative portraits that reflect their unique stories.

Visual Voices is a journey of self-discovery, offering young people the tools to better understand who they are and how they see the world through the power of image-making.

APRIL

My son, my heart, my world.
Sabey baby, you inspire mommy.
You inspire mommy to be a better version of herself.
You give me the strength and will to live.
You saved me from myself.
I was stuck between life or death.
You made me choose life.
My son, my heart, my world.
You are my everything.
I am nothing without you.
Everyday I'm healing through you.

QUINCY

A kid who was taken advantage of for his sexuality
is now a rainbow butterfly in the night sky,
showing his wings as he flies high with the birds,
never stopping being who I am.

Quincy will always be the king and queen.
As I come out of the dark and into the light,
I feel a change in the world, the sky, and my surroundings—
the way people embrace me,
and the galaxy’s light that shines within me.

SAMMIE

I am the flower that blooms in the harshest climates
the fish that swim up stream
I am the snow you see long after winter seasons
the cooling summer breeze
I am the pain and pleasure
I’m the duality that dichotomy breeds
I’ve been forced to hide gaged and blind
I’m the survival built instinctively
I am interchanging yes but I’m bound by childlike naivety
my mind is my cell
the bars ignorance
and only time will set me free
it’s funny the way
I’m nothing at all
yet everything at once
the way I’m faceless until perceived
I am the victim yes
but i’m also the offender
so don’t waste your pity on me.
