Echoes 2026
An exhibition by youth artists from Afghanistan
July 2026
Echoes showcases the transformative journey of 10 youth participants who are all refugees from Afghanistan and now living in the Modesto, California area. Over the course of five workshops, these young artists delved into their shadow selves through photography and storytelling.
This exhibition presents their introspective exploration through self-portraits that capture the complexity of identity and the interplay of light and darkness within.

ما تمام زندگی را در جستجوی خویش میگذرانیم. ولی آنچه را که میبینیم، همیشه حقیقت ما نیست. چهرهای ساختهایم، نامی که گذاشتهایم، نقشهایی را پذیرفتهایم و منیت های را ساختهایم و هویت های کاذبی را پذیرفتهایم. شاید اینها تنها سایهای از حقیقت کلّی وجود ما باشد. و یا شاید سایهای از چیزی عمیقتری باشد.
در برابر آیینهای ایستادهام که انتظار میرود تصویر خودم را منعکس کند اما آنچه را باز میگرداند جز فضای خالی و غبار نیست. گویی آنچه سالها به نام (من) شناختهام، چیزی جز تصویری گذرا نبوده است.
شاید شناخت آنچه نیست که ما بدست بیاوریم و یا چیزی بر ما اضافه شود بلکه آنچه که غیر واقعی است آرام آرام فرو میریزد.
آینه چیزی را از من نگرفته است فقط چیزی را انعکاس داده است وجود ندارد
برای رسیدن به حقیقت ملزم بر گذشتن از تصویر های ساختهی ذهن خود هستیم.

We spend our entire lives in search of ourselves, yet what we see is not always our true nature. We have constructed a face, adopted a name, accepted roles, created egos, and embraced false identities. Perhaps these are only a shadow of the greater truth of our existence. Or perhaps they are merely the shadow of something even deeper.
I stand before a mirror that is expected to reflect my image, yet what it returns is nothing but empty space and dust. It is as though what I have known for years as “me” has been nothing more than a passing image.
Perhaps self-knowledge is not something we acquire, nor something that is added to us. Rather, it is that which is unreal that gradually falls away.
The mirror has taken nothing from me; it has simply reflected what does not exist.
To arrive at the truth, we are compelled to pass beyond the images our own minds have created.

سرزمین رویایی:
سرزمین رویایی (زندگی بینقص): • در افغانستان که بزرگ میشدم، فکر میکردم همه مشکلات فقط اینجا وجود دارد، و فکر میکردم وقتی فرصت مهاجرت به ایتالیا را پیدا کنم، در اروپا سرزمین رویا ها وجود خواهد داشت، اما اشتباه میکردم، سپس به آمریکا نقل مکان کردم، دوباره به من ثابت شد که هیچ سرزمین رویایی وجود ندارد. در افغانستان فکر می کردم که دروغ گفتن ، داشتن افراد نادرست، کلاهبرداری، داشتن مشکلات امنیتی و ایمنی فقط در افغانستان وجود دارد، در واقع این طبیعت انسان است و همه انسانها در سراسر جهان یکسان هستند.
شما باید از ساعت ۹ صبح تا ۵ عصر کار کنید، ۸ ساعت روی پاهایتان ایستاده شوید تا بتوانید از پس کرایه خانه و بل های برایید
فقط یاد گرفتم که زندگی را با سختیهایش بپذیر، با واقعیت روبرو شو، از توهم دست بردار. به این ترتیب قویتر شدم.

Utopia (perfect life): growing in Afghanistan I thought, all the problems only exist here, and I thought once I get the opportunity to move to Italy, there would be utopia in Europe, but I was wrong, then I moved to US, again it proved me that there is no utopia. I thought back in Afghanistan that lying, having dishonest people, fraud, having security and safety problems only exist in Afghanistan, in fact it’s human nature and all humans across the world are the same.
You have to work a 9-5 job, stand on your legs for 8 hours, so you can afford the rent and bills.
Just I learned that accept the life with its hardships, face the reality , stop being delusional. This way I got stronger.
