Echoes 2026

An exhibition by youth artists from Afghanistan

JULY 2026

Echoes showcases the transformative journey of 10 youth participants who are all refugees from Afghanistan and now living in the Modesto, California area. Over the course of five workshops, these young artists delved into their shadow selves through photography and storytelling.

This exhibition presents their introspective exploration through self-portraits that capture the complexity of identity and the interplay of light and darkness within.

We spend our entire lives in search of ourselves, yet what we see is not always our true nature. We have constructed a face, adopted a name, accepted roles, created egos, and embraced false identities. Perhaps these are only a shadow of the greater truth of our existence. Or perhaps they are merely the shadow of something even deeper.

I stand before a mirror that is expected to reflect my image, yet what it returns is nothing but empty space and dust. It is as though what I have known for years as “me” has been nothing more than a passing image.

Perhaps self-knowledge is not something we acquire, nor something that is added to us. Rather, it is that which is unreal that gradually falls away.

The mirror has taken nothing from me; it has simply reflected what does not exist.

To arrive at the truth, we are compelled to pass beyond the images our own minds have created.

Utopia (perfect life): growing in Afghanistan I thought, all the problems only exist here, and I thought once I get the opportunity to move to Italy, there would be utopia in Europe, but I was wrong, then I moved to US, again it proved me that there is no utopia. I thought back in Afghanistan that lying, having dishonest people, fraud, having security and safety problems only exist in Afghanistan, in fact it’s human nature and all humans across the world are the same.

You have to work a 9-5 job, stand on your legs for 8 hours, so you can afford the rent and bills.

Just I learned that accept the life with its hardships, face the reality , stop being delusional. This way I got stronger.

The red upon my face is not makeup.
It is every dream they tried to erase.
It is the classroom door closed before I could enter.
The book taken from my hands.
The future stolen before it could begin.
I was told to lower my eyes,
to silence my voice,
to disappear beneath the weight of fear.
But my heart remembers another Afghanistan
one where girls laughed, learned,
and carried hope like sunlight.
Every mark tells a story.
Not of weakness,
but of survival.
You can lock the schools.
You can hide the books.
You can punish our courage.
But you cannot imprison a dream.
I am an Afghan girl.
I am more than the scars you see.
More than the silence forced upon me.
More than the fear that follows every step.
One day, these red stains will wash away.
And what remains
will be our voices
stronger than violence,
brighter than fear,
and impossible to silence.

They tried to convince me that dreams belong only to those who are free. They told girls like me to lower our eyes, stay silent, and stop reaching for the light. But I learned something they could never understand. Hope cannot be locked behind closed doors or erased by fear.

So I lift my hands toward the light. In my hands rests a crystal, clear and full of light. To others, it may look like ordinary glass, but to me, it holds every dream I have carried since I was a little girl. Every step I take brings me closer to my future, and every obstacle reminds me why I must keep going.

Girls in Afghanistan are losing their classrooms, their voices, and their freedom. Many are losing hope. But I refuse to lose mine. Hope is the one thing no one can take from me. I keep my eyes on the light because that light is my future.

Inside the crystal, I see the woman I am becoming—educated, strong, fearless, and free. I carry Afghanistan in my heart, not as a place of broken dreams, but as a place worth dreaming for. For every girl who is told she cannot learn, I will keep learning. For every girl whose voice is silenced, I will keep speaking.

My dream is louder than fear. My hope is stronger than oppression. No matter how many walls stand before me, I will keep moving toward the light.

Because one day, I will become everything they said a girl like me could never be.

My name is Omar. I grew up in a middle class family in Afghanistan, a country with war, pain, and hope. Some people still fight for a better life, and some have lost hope because they have lost too many loved ones. I was born in the land of Rumi, a place that was once full of peace and kindness. Today, girls cannot go to school, and boys do not have real freedom, but many people still have hope. Many people dream of living in another country so they can study, live freely, and have a better future.

I am one of them, and today I live in America.

After many hard days, I came here to study, work hard, and become successful. But part of my heart is still in Afghanistan, with the people who live with poverty, pain, and hope. I hope one day I can go back to my country because everyone belongs to the place where they were born.I hope my generation and the next generations can build Afghanistan again. I hope for a better tomorrow.

Rumi once said, "The wound is the place where the Light enters you."

My name is Shahedullah, and I was born in Kabul, Afghanistan. My journey through life has been filled with challenges, hardships, and experiences that have shaped me into the person I am today. I witnessed the difficult days of war and the suffering of innocent people, but I never stopped working toward building a better future for myself. From striving for success at one of the largest educational institutes in Kabul to immigrating to a country where I knew neither the language nor the culture, my life has been a journey of learning and growth. Starting over in a new place without knowing anyone was one of the hardest chapters of my life, but with patience, hope, and determination, I found my way. I began by editing small videos, and through hard work, perseverance, and passion, I continued to grow and improve my skills. My story is not only about hardship; it is a story of hope, resilience, and growth. This is only one part of my life journey, and the next chapters are still being written.

My journey has shown me that with these two powerful weapons—time and patience—it is possible to build a new life from the ashes of war and migration.

I am an Afghan girl who moved to the United States with big dreams. Starting a new life was not easy. I had to learn a new language, understand a new culture, and deal with being far from my home and family. Many times, I felt lonely and missed Afghanistan. But I never gave up. I believed in myself and kept working hard. My goal is to make my family proud, bring honor to my country, and become someone I can be proud of. No matter who I become in the future, I will always remember where I came from and carry my roots with me.

I come from a place where opportunities were few, but dreams were not.

The roads were difficult, and the future often felt uncertain. Yet those challenges did not take away my ambition. They only gave it a reason to grow.

Then I arrived in a new country. A new language, a new culture, and a new way of life stood in front of me. Everything around me changed, but something inside me remained the same.

My goals did not change.

I still wake up every day with the desire to learn, to grow, and to build a future that makes my family proud. There are moments of struggle, moments of doubt, and moments when the journey feels long. But I keep moving forward.

Because I carry more than my own dreams.

I carry my family's hopes, my homeland's future, every sacrifice that brought me here, and the belief that hard work can turn possibility into reality.

Whenever the road becomes difficult, I remind myself:

"You are different. You are special. Be the best version of yourself."

Those words push me forward when I am tired, uncertain, or afraid to fail.

This photo is not about where I came from or where I am today.

It is about the path between them.

And no matter how long that path becomes, I will keep walking.

I came from Afghanistan, a place that taught me hardship before it ever taught me happiness.

Poverty wasn't a phase—it was part of my everyday life. Dreams were free, but chasing them came with a price I couldn't always afford.

I believed that leaving my country would change everything. Instead, I found a different kind of struggle. Being far from home, feeling like a stranger, carrying memories no one else could understand.

There were days when I questioned my purpose, nights when I lost all motivation, and moments when every dream I had seemed to disappear before I could reach it.

Life kept teaching me that not every battle is visible. Some wars are fought in silence, behind a smile, and inside a tired heart.

I stopped telling people how I felt because I realized not everyone understands pain they can't see.

I stopped explaining. Silence understands me better.

But somehow I'm still here. Still standing.

I’m from Afghanistan
Before I came to a different country,
I had a life full of fear.
I had dreams,
but I did not know
if I would live long enough to reach them.
I wanted an education,
but every trip to school
felt like a risk.
I was afraid
that I might not come back home.
I was afraid
that the people I loved
might not be there when I returned.
I did not grow up
thinking about what I wanted to become.
I grew up
thinking about how to stay alive.
People ask me,
“Why did you leave your home?”
I did not leave
because I stopped loving my country.
I left
because I wanted a chance to live,
to learn,
and to dream without fear.
When I came to the United States,
I brought two things with me:
Hope
and pain.

Hope for a better future.
Pain from everything
I had to leave behind.
People see me smiling.
They think I have forgotten.
But they do not see
the memories I carry every day.
My body is here,
but a piece of my heart
is still in Afghanistan.
I still think about the children
who are waiting
for the chance I was given.
Today, I can go to school.
I can dream.
I can speak without fear.
And every time I learn something new,
I remember the boy
who only wished
for one safe day,
one open classroom,
and one chance.
That boy is still inside me.
And I will never stop learning,
never stop hoping,
and never stop believing
that one day,
every child in my country
will have the same chance I have today.
